Chrysocolla

My sister Rita gave me this stone while I was visiting.  I will point
out that as we were looking at all the stones that we are discussing
in the daily mailing, she would ask me what each stone was.  I was
able to name most of the stones . . . pretty good considering I haven't
been rock hounding for a lot of years !  Anyway, when we came
to this stone, I had guessed azurite ( wrong ) and then I thought
perhaps it was a form of turquoise.  ( wrong )  Rita thought it was
rhodochrosite, so I made a note . . . I was sure to forget otherwise.
When I got home, I looked up rhodochrosite and saw that it was
a pink or light red stone.   This puzzled me, so while I was talking
to Belinda on the phone ( Woo Hoo . . . all the way from Australia ! )
we discussed the stone.  I sent a picture of it to her, because I was
absolutely baffled by it !   Belinda got back to me and identified
this stone as Chrysocolla !    I ran a hardness test to be certain.
Mystery solved !

( This stone kept toppling over, so I used the calcite to prop it up. )

Here is what I found about this stone.

Legend has it that the Eilat Stone variety of this gemstone was
originally mined in King Solomon's mines.
The colors of Chrysocolla range from bright green to deep blue.
Pure specimens are too soft to be used in jewelry, but most
chrysocolla contains other material such as chalcedony and quartz.
The name of this gemstone comes from the Greek meaning
"Blue Gold" ; this is a reference to the fact that chrysocolla was
once used to solder pieces of gold.

Member of the quartz clan.  Also known as Gem Silica.

Is associated with tranquility, serenity, peace, subconscious wisdom,

Here is what Billie has to say about Chrysocolla . . .

Chrysocolla:  For thousands of years chrysocolla has been the stone
of concilliation & reassurance throughout the world.  The ancient
Egyptians called it a wise stone because those who wore it came up
with clever compromises while also being protected from psychological
damage.  It was said to make violent-tempered people sensitive &
tolerant.  This is apparently why Cleopatra carried a chysocolla with
her wherever she went.  Chrysocolla is only rarely found today, which
is why it is fairly expensive.

Placed on the forehead, it has a cooling effect while also lowering fever.
Minor burns are treated by placing a stone on the burn in order to
prevent the formation of a blister.  Chrysocolla water, sipped slowly,
is said to be very refreshing in the case of throat inflammation.  It also
calms over-excited nerves.  Small children who wear a chrysocolla
pendant directly on the skin benefit from good bone formation &
growth.  The stone also lower stress and tension while reducing
anger & hatred.  It promotes calmness, goodness & tolerance, and
strengthens intuition.   It is associated with Taurus, Cancer, Aquarius,
& Libra.

Chrysocolla is particularly effective when carried as a touchstone.
It should be cleansed once a month under warm running water &
then charged overnight in a bowl with tumbled hematite stones.
